A gap exists in support services to adults with developmental challenges. Services for youth who have challenges have sprung up in the past decade, but basic services to enable earnings and housing for the adult population is lacking.
ASPIE’s vision is to create programs for individuals with autism and similar developmental and cognitive challenges, and their caregivers, to:
- Provide for their needs, develop their individual potential and improve their sense of well-being
- Increase their knowledge and skills
- Enhance their ability to thrive independently in their environment.
ASPIE will offer a pathway and a set of alternatives to achieve greater independence, by providing:
- A platform (both people-based and a virtual network) to coordinate and provide supplemental earnings and housing options
- Appropriate skills assessment, guidance, planning and implementation tools
ASPIE can provide sustainable supplemental earnings for artisans and product producers by creating a viable internet-based platform for personally designed and produced/handcrafted products. This will create a measure of financial enhancement currently not available to those who desperately need it, a source of meaningful products for purchase by those who are interested, and a concerted way to educate the general population about the lives of those with disabilities who live all around them. ASPIE will also arrange for specialized short term work projects in select cities for companies who desire specific services using trained labor by persons with disabilities. Non-discrimination Policy ASPIE follows an equal opportunity policy in its programs and services. ASPIE accepts clients without regard to race, creed, color, ethnicity, political affiliation, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, age, physical or mental ability, veteran status, military obligations, and marital status.
ASPIE can provide arrangements for independent housing. Current federal social services focus on behavioral and skills training. There are no dedicated housing programs for persons with these unique challenges. As a result, caregivers have begun to purchase properties for the differently-abled with the intent to find similar renters, or purchase properties on a collective basis. The ASPIE platform can provide the link to a wide range of caregivers and property sellers. Assistance and advice will be provided to avoid any jeopardy to government social service or medical funding. The goal is to create self-determined housing options selected by the clients separately from other supports/services, appropriate housing/living models for adults with challenges, and independent households formed apart from the caregivers.
